Treat Gummy Smile With Crown Lengthening in Wantagh

Do you find yourself ducking the cameras because you’re embarrassed by your smile? For many patients, pictures are simply a reminder of the discomfiture of their smile and though there may be a variety of reasons for this, one common reason we see is “gummy” smile. “Gummy” smile occurs in patients who have excess gum tissue covering their teeth, making teeth appear shorter, even if they are of proper length. Along with appearance, “gummy” smile can also have an effect on dental hygiene, making it harder to keep excess gum tissue and underlying teeth clean. “Gummy” smile influences the way facial muscles operate and sometimes, patients may opt for BOTOX® cosmetic to help calm facial muscles from over exposing gum tissue.  At Nosov Cosmetic Dentistry, we offer crown lengthening in Wantagh to improve the esthetics of your gum line and restore your smile.

What is crown lengthening?

When too much of a tooth hides beneath the gums, dental restorations that require the entire tooth for placement and support, such as crowns, fillings, and veneers, are not possible until more of the natural tooth is exposed. Crown lengthening removes excess gum and bone tissue around teeth, allowing for easy reach and restoration of troubled teeth. During the procedure, a flap of gum is lifted and the bone height of the tooth is adjusted. Once the bone is attuned to the desired length, the gums are repositioned back onto the root of the tooth.

How can crown lengthening help me?

Crown lengthening does more than enhance your smile. It can provide an array of benefits when it comes to caring for your smile. Crown lengthening allows for:

  • Improved oral hygiene
  • Reduced risk of tooth decay
  • Reshaped gum line for a more symmetrical smile
  • Placement of a restoration if a tooth breaks beneath the gum line
  • Preservation of natural teeth

How is crown lengthening performed?

Crown lengthening is performed under local anesthesia. Dr. Nosov will make incisions in the mouth to pull back and remove excess gum tissue. In some cases, bone tissue from surrounding teeth may need to be removed  if there is too much bone covering the crown. After the surgery, if necessary, sutures are placed. Patients remain on a restricted diet a few days after surgery and may require mild pain relievers such as Advil or Tylenol.
